Manacá-de-cheiro is a tree belonging to the Solanaceae family, originally from the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. The medium-sized tree may reach about 3 meters in height, with a round crown 2 meters in diameter, and featuring small, permanent leaves. Its colorful and very fragrant flowers delights anyone who passes by. Its popular name is Manacá-de-cheiro and its scientific name is Brunfelsia uniflora. With smooth oval leaves, the Manacá blooms in September/October. During this time, the tree has a very special set of colors. The flowers blossom in a blue-purple tone and over time, they lighten, going from pink to white. The tree attracts butterflies, one of them being the Manacá Butterfly, which lays its eggs only on this tree’s leaves, which are the caterpillars’ only food. For butterfly lovers, the tree is a reference to life. In this encounter between life, art and nature, the online version of the work appears in the media environment, as an emerging proposal, in which, like butterflies, we approach and experience its growth, development and disappearance. By means of an algorithm, the parameters of the work takes into account the Sun’s position and the tree’s color characteristics, separated by three moments, until they disappear over time.

Gilbertto Prado, is artist and coordinator of the Group Poéticas Digitais. PhD at the University of Paris I – Panthéon Sorbonne, he works with art in networks and interactive installations. Currently he is Professor at the Post-Graduate Programs of Design at the University Anhembi Morumbi and Visual Arts at University of São Paulo.

Suzete Venturelli is a PhD professor at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, artist and researcher at the Research and Development Council (CNPq). She has written several books, curated and participates in exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. Her greatest interest currently involves design, art and artificial intelligence.
