Steel City
Max Schleser
This Cinematic VR experience portrays the city’s public art, the Rhine Orange, Landschaftspark, Love Parade memorial and Tiger Turtle – Magic Mountain through audio-visual abstraction. As a kaleidoscope brings new perspectives into interaction through its own abstraction and reflection, Steel City aims to change the stereotypical representation of this post-industrial region. By means of using an accelerometer microphone the sound of these steel sculptures was recorded and provided an inspiration for the visual treatment of the video artwork.
Kaleidoscope translates from the ancient Greek for observation in beautiful form. Max Schleser captured these public artworks with an omnidirectional video camera and Simon Longo/Dithernoise’s original soundscape for this audio-visual experience is based on the field recordings. The Cinematic VR experience as much as the public artworks, display the dialectic of change and stagnation.

Max Schleser is a filmmaker, Adobe Education Leader, Founder of the Mobile Innovation Network & Association (www.mina.pro) and Screening Director of the International Mobile Innovation Screening & Festival. Max’s research expertise are Immersive Media and Creative Arts 4.0 with a focus on Cinematic VR and interactive filmmaking. His research explores Screen Production, Emerging Media and Smartphone Filmmaking for community engagement, creative transformation and transmedia storytelling.
Max’s experimental films, moving-image arts and cinematic VR projects are screened at film festivals and exhibited in galleries as well as museums (www.schleser.nz). His community engaged documentaries are broadcasted on TV and online (https://www.behance.net/maxschleser).
Simon Longo, works also under the artist names and pseudonyms DITHERNOISE, Enere, Citizens of Illusion and Cosmic traveller. He makes soundscapes, sonic art and time based visual work, which is inspired by theories of consciousness and synaesthesia. His work has been performed and exhibited internationally at Noise and Fury in Moscow with Alexei Borisov, The Ritmic Section, Institute of Contemporary Art Research in Kyiv, Art and the Senses, Science Oxford Gallery UK, Dallas Festival of Light USA. Simon produced the audio for Max with a Keitai, which is featured in the film archive in the Forum des Images in Paris.
